At home in a Vermont garden’s perennial border and orchard.

Nearly two decades later, at the Southern Connecticut State University Reflection Garden, the big idea began as a way to honor the four teachers who had matriculated there and were killed in the 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. This small memorial garden is the first of several gathering areas, paths, and gateways that together will become a living expression of the university’s core ideals of social justice—civility, respect, dignity, compassion, and kindness—for the entire campus and its neighboring communities.

Julie finds joy in the gardens and parks she designs for others around the world. “Nothing is more fun than being able to dream up, refine on paper, shepherd into place, and maintain into the future a space that you conceived and birthed. It’s like being a mother.”
